Complex numbers are numbers that extend our usual counting numbers to include solutions to equations like \(x^2 + 1 = 0\), which have no real solutions. They are written in the form \(a + bi\), where \(a\) is the real part, \(b\) is the imaginary part, and \(i\) is the imaginary unit satisfying \(i^2 = -1\). Think of complex numbers as points or vectors on a two-dimensional plane, with the horizontal axis representing the real part and the vertical axis the imaginary part.
