The Clause IV

Clause IV of the UK Labour Party's constitution originally committed the party to establishing a socialist economy through public ownership and control of resources, aiming for economic equality and social justice. It emphasized collective ownership of industries, workers’ rights, and reducing inequality. Over time, the wording was amended to allow for a more flexible approach, including support for a mixed economy with private enterprise, while still advocating for social justice and public welfare. Essentially, Clause IV outlined the party's fundamental goal of building a fairer, more equitable society through both public and private sector cooperation.
