The Cape Floral Region
The Cape Floral Region, located in South Africa, is one of the world’s richest areas for plant diversity and endemism, meaning many species found there are unique to the region. It covers the Cape Floristic Kingdom, which includes Cape Town and surrounding areas, and features a Mediterranean climate with hot, dry summers and mild, wet winters. Its diverse habitats, including fynbos (a unique shrubland), mountain ranges, and coastal areas, support over 9,000 plant species, many of which are rare or endangered. Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the region plays a crucial role in global biodiversity conservation.
