The Black Star Line

The Black Star Line was a shipping company founded in 1919 by Marcus Garvey, a prominent Black leader, to promote economic independence and strengthen the African diaspora. Its goal was to enable people of African descent to travel, trade, and connect globally by establishing a fleet of ships owned and operated by Black entrepreneurs. Although it faced financial and operational challenges, the Black Star Line symbolized Black pride, self-sufficiency, and the fight against racial discrimination by aiming to create economic opportunities and solidarity within the African and African-American communities.
