The Black Methodist Movement

The Black Methodist Movement was a religious and social movement in the 19th and early 20th centuries that sought to promote the spiritual, social, and civil rights of Black people within Methodist churches. It emerged in response to racial segregation, discrimination, and exclusion faced by African Americans in predominantly white Methodist denominations. Leaders and congregations worked to create independent Black Methodist churches, address racial injustices, and foster a sense of community and cultural identity. The movement played a significant role in strengthening Black religious life and advocating for social equality within and beyond the church.
