The BITE Model
The BITE Model is a tool created by psychologist Dr. Steven Hassan to understand how groups or leaders control members’ lives. It breaks down into four areas: Behavior, Information, Thoughts, and Emotions. Control over Behavior involves restrictions on activities; controlling Information limits what members hear or see; Thought control influences beliefs and thinking patterns; and Emotional control manipulates feelings to maintain loyalty. Together, these tactics can create dependency and conformity, often isolating individuals from outside influences. The model helps identify and understand how these controlling methods work in scenarios like cults or high-control groups.
