The Big Hole
The Big Hole, also known as the Kimberley Mine, is a large, historic open-pit diamond mine in South Africa. It was excavated in the late 19th century during a diamond rush, creating a massive, bowl-shaped hole in the earth, measuring about 463 meters (1,520 feet) in circumference and 240 meters (790 feet) deep. The site played a significant role in the diamond industry and is now a heritage attraction, featuring museum exhibits and a visitors' center. The Big Hole serves as a reminder of South Africa's diamond history and the scale of large-scale mining operations.
