The Battle of Brooklyn

The Battle of Brooklyn, fought in August 1776, was the first major battle of the American Revolutionary War. British forces aimed to capture New York City and control the harbor. Patriot troops, led by General George Washington, tried to defend the city but were outflanked and overwhelmed by British troops. The Patriots retreated across the East River to Manhattan, suffering a significant defeat. Despite the loss, Washington’s strategic retreat helped preserve much of his army, allowing continued resistance. The battle demonstrated the British’s strength but also showed the resilience and strategic importance of Washington’s leadership.
