The Audiogram

An audiogram is a chart that shows how well you hear different pitches or tones. It plots loudness (volume) on the vertical axis and pitch (frequency) on the horizontal axis. During testing, hearing thresholds are measured—meaning the quietest sounds you can detect at each pitch—and marked on the chart. The result helps identify if you have normal hearing or if there are hearing losses at certain frequencies, such as high or low pitches. Audiograms assist audiologists in diagnosing hearing issues and determining appropriate treatments or hearing aids.
