The Atterbury Plot

The Atterbury Plot was a secret plan in 1722 by British Jacobites aiming to overthrow King George I and restore the deposed James II. Led by Lord Bolingbroke and others, the conspirators intended to trigger a rebellion, including a military uprising and an invasion from France. The plot was uncovered before it could unfold, leading to arrests and increased government crackdown on dissent. It reflected ongoing tensions between supporters of the Catholic Stuart line and the Protestant Hanoverian monarchy, and its failure reinforced the stability of the reigning government at that time.
