the assassination of Lord Darnley
Lord Darnley, the husband of Mary, Queen of Scots, was assassinated in 1567. He was murdered in his residence in Edinburgh, likely during a conspiracy involving Mary’s controversial friend, James Hepburn, Earl of Bothwell. The plot aimed to remove Darnley as he was seen as a threat due to disputes over power and influence. A group of men, possibly including Bothwell, entered Darnley's house, and he was strangled and stabbed. His murder plunged Mary into greater political turmoil, leading to her eventual abdication and imprisonment.
