The APOE gene

The APOE gene provides instructions for making a protein called apolipoprotein E, which plays a key role in processing fats in the body and brain. There are different versions (alleles) of this gene—most commonly called ε2, ε3, and ε4—that influence how effectively fats and other substances are managed. The ε4 variant is associated with a higher risk of developing Alzheimer's disease and cardiovascular issues, while ε2 may offer some protection. Understanding your APOE status can provide insight into your health risks, but it’s just one factor among many that influence those conditions.
