The Angola Three

The Angola Three are three Black activists—Albert Woodfox, Herman Wallace, and Robert King—who were imprisoned for decades at Louisiana State Penitentiary (Angola Prison). They were accused of involvement in a 1970 killing of a prison guard but maintained their innocence and argued they were targeted for their activism and political beliefs. Wallace and Woodfox spent over 40 years in solitary confinement, one of the longest such periods in U.S. history. Their case highlights issues of racial injustice, wrongful convictions, and the use of solitary confinement in the U.S. criminal justice system.
