The Act Up movement
ACT UP (AIDS Coalition to Unleash Power) is an activist organization founded in 1987 to raise awareness and advocate for people affected by HIV/AIDS. It used direct action, protests, and lobbying to pressure governments and institutions to increase funding for research, improve access to treatment, and combat discrimination. ACT UP aimed to accelerate medical responses and ensure that HIV/AIDS was addressed as a public health priority. Its efforts contributed to significant advances in treatment and greater public consciousness about the epidemic. The movement is known for its bold, confrontational style and commitment to social justice.
