The Act of 1846

The Act of 1846, known as the Oregon Treaty, was an agreement between the United States and Britain that settled the boundary of the Oregon Territory. It established the U.S.-Canada border along the 49th parallel from the Rockies to the Pacific Ocean, effectively giving the U.S. control of what is now Oregon, Washington, and Idaho, while Britain retained parts of present-day British Columbia. This treaty ended a long-standing dispute over the region, facilitating westward expansion for the U.S. and peacefully resolving international tensions in that area.
