The Acmeists

The Acmeists were a group of Russian poets active in the early 20th century, around 1910-1920, who sought clarity and artistic precision in their work. They emphasized tangible, concrete images and craftsmanship over emotional or abstract themes, valuing simplicity and tradition. Influenced by Western modernism but favoring clear expression, they aimed to revive poetic quality amidst the chaos of a changing society. Prominent members included Anna Akhmatova and Osip Mandelstam. Their movement marked a shift toward more measured, skillful poetry, contrasting with the more emotional Symbolists who preceded them.
