Thanjavur Maratha

The Thanjavur Maratha refers to the Maratha rulers who governed the Thanjavur region in southern India from the late 17th to early 19th centuries. Originally from western India, they established their rule after the decline of the Chola and Vijayanagara empires. They helped revive regional arts, culture, and architecture, most notably contributing to the development of the Tanjore (Thanjavur) style of painting and the Brihadeeswarar Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Their rule marked a significant period of regional political stability and cultural growth in Tamil Nadu before British colonization.
