Tetrao urogallus
Tetrao urogallus, commonly known as the Western Capercaillie or wood grouse, is a large bird native to European forests. Known for its impressive size and striking appearance, males have dark plumage with iridescent green and blue highlights, along with distinctive tail feathers. They are ground-dwelling birds that feed on berries, leaves, and insects. During the breeding season, males perform elaborate courtship displays to attract females, often involving impressive fan-like tail fanning and vocal calls. They prefer mature, coniferous or mixed forests and play a vital role in their ecosystem as seed dispersers.
