Terry Schiavo case
The Terri Schiavo case was a legal and ethical controversy in the U.S. that began in the 1990s. Terri Schiavo suffered a cardiac arrest in 1990, leaving her in a persistent vegetative state. Her husband, Michael, wanted to remove her feeding tube, believing she wouldn’t have wanted to live in such a condition. Her parents opposed this, wanting to keep her alive. The case sparked nationwide debates about medical ethics, end-of-life decisions, and the role of government in personal matters. After years of court battles, the feeding tube was finally removed in 2005, and Schiavo passed away shortly thereafter.
