Terrain building is the process of creating physical landscapes for model environments, such as in tabletop gaming, model railroads, or dioramas. It involves shaping materials like foam, plaster, or papier-mâché to craft features like hills, mountains, valleys, and water bodies. Artists add textures, paint, and details to make the landscape realistic or stylized, enhancing visual appeal and storytelling. The goal is to transform flat surfaces into three-dimensional, believable environments that complement the miniature figures or models placed within them.
