Terpene Synthases

Terpene synthases are specialized enzymes in plants, fungi, and some bacteria that produce terpenes—aromatic compounds responsible for fragrances, flavors, and colors. These enzymes take small molecules called precursors and transform them into a wide variety of complex terpenes through chemical reactions. Terpenes play roles in plant defense, attraction of pollinators, and ecological interactions. In essence, terpene synthases direct the creation of diverse natural chemicals that contribute to an organism's survival and interaction with its environment.
