Terence Macswiney
Terence MacSwiney was an Irish politician and activist who championed Ireland’s independence from Britain. As the Lord Mayor of Cork, he became a symbol of resistance during the Irish War of Independence. In 1920, he was imprisoned by the British for his involvement with the Irish Republican Army (IRA). While on hunger strike to protest his detention, he voluntarily refused food and ultimately died after 74 days without eating, drawing international attention to Ireland’s cause. His sacrifice made him a revered figure in Irish history and a martyr for the independence movement.
