Teochew dialect
Teochew dialect is a Chinese language spoken mainly by the Teochew people from Chaoshan region in Guangdong province, China. It belongs to the Southern Min (or Minnan) language group and has distinct pronunciation, vocabulary, and tones that set it apart from Mandarin and Cantonese. Known for its melodious sound, Teochew is often used in traditional operas, music, and local communication. It maintains many historical linguistic features and is cherished for cultural identity. While less common outside its native region, it boasts a rich oral literature and continues to be spoken by millions, both within China and in overseas Teochew communities.
