Tenochtitlán (modern site)

Tenochtitlán was the capital city of the Aztec Empire, located on what is now Mexico City. Founded around 1325, it was built on an island in Lake Texcoco, with a complex system of canals, causeways, and chinampas (floating gardens) supporting its population and agriculture. At its height, it was a large, sophisticated urban center with impressive temples, markets, and social structures. Conquered by the Spanish in 1521, the city’s ruins were later built over, but archeologists have uncovered its advanced engineering and rich cultural history, offering insights into Aztec civilization.
