Tenochtitlán (historical city)
Tenochtitlán was the capital of the Aztec Empire, built on an island in Lake Texcoco in present-day Mexico City. Founded around 1325, it grew into a large, sophisticated city with remarkable architecture, including temples, palaces, and causeways connecting it to the mainland. The city was a major political, religious, and economic center, demonstrating advanced engineering using chinampas (floating gardens) for agriculture. Conquered by Spanish conquistadors in 1521, Tenochtitlán was largely destroyed and replaced by Mexico City, leaving behind archaeological insights into Aztec civilization and urban planning.
