Tenerife Airport Disaster
The Tenerife Airport Disaster was a tragic aviation accident that occurred on March 27, 1977, involving two Boeing 747 jumbo jets on the runway at Gran Canaria Airport. Due to miscommunication, fog, and ambiguous radio instructions, both planes mistakenly believed the other was cleared for takeoff. As a result, they collided, causing a catastrophic fire that killed 583 of the 644 people on board. This incident remains the deadliest aviation accident in history and highlighted the importance of clear communication protocols, leading to significant improvements in airline safety and cockpit procedures.
