Te Urewera (Te Urewera Trust)
Te Urewera is a protected natural area in New Zealand, designated as a legal entity with the Te Urewera Trust managing its conservation and cultural heritage. Unlike traditional parks, Te Urewera has a unique status: it’s considered a Treaty of Waitangi settlement that recognizes it as a living entity with its own legal rights, incorporating Māori values and stewardship. The Trust oversees preserving the environment, respecting Māori tikanga, and enabling public access, ensuring the area’s ecological health and cultural significance are maintained for future generations.
