Te Tīriti o Waitangi Tribunal

The Te Tiriti o Waitangi Tribunal is a New Zealand government body established in 1975 to investigate and address breaches of the Treaty of Waitangi, signed in 1840 between Māori iwi (tribes) and the Crown. Its role is to hear claims from Māori about injustices or infringements related to land, resources, and rights, and to recommend remedies or compensation. The Tribunal helps ensure Māori concerns are acknowledged and that the principles of partnership, protection, and participation identified in the Treaty are respected within New Zealand's legal and social framework.
