Tchambuli Tribe

The Tchambuli Tribe, also known as the Chambuli or Chambuyu, is an indigenous group from the Sibulu Lake region in Papua New Guinea. They have a unique social structure where gender roles are reversed compared to many other societies. Women are the dominant and assertive gender, managing daily life and social affairs, while men are more passive and engaged in ceremonial roles. This reversal highlights their flexible, culturally specific views on gender and gender roles. The Tchambuli tribe's social organization challenges Western stereotypes about gender behavior, emphasizing that gender roles are culturally constructed and vary widely across societies.
