Tatami
Tatami are traditional Japanese mats used as flooring in homes, tea rooms, and martial arts dojos. Made from rice straw or compressed wood chipboards covered with woven soft rush (igusa) straw, they provide a natural, resilient surface. Tatami mats are typically rectangular, about 3 by 6 feet, and are used to define room spaces, offering comfort and insulation. They also carry cultural significance, reflecting traditional Japanese aesthetics and practices, such as tea ceremonies. Properly maintained, tatami contribute to a serene, harmonious environment and are integral to many aspects of Japanese architecture and lifestyle.
