Tanzanian African National Union

The Tanganyika African National Union (TANU) was a political party in Tanzania, founded in 1954 to promote independence from British colonial rule. Led by Julius Nyerere, TANU united various ethnic groups under a common goal of self-governance. It played a central role in Tanzania’s transition to independence in 1961 and later merged with other groups to form the Tanzania African National Union (TANU) in 1964, establishing the ruling party that guided Tanzania's political development. TANU emphasized African nationalism, unity, and socialism, shaping the country's post-independence policies and identity.
