Tansen (Miyan Tansen)
Miyan Tansen was a legendary Indian musician and composer from the 16th century, considered one of the greatest figures in classical Indian music. He served as a court musician in the Mughal emperor Akbar's court and is credited with developing and popularizing many ragas—melodic frameworks used in Indian music. His mastery over voice and instrumentation influenced generations of musicians. Tansen’s legendary abilities include performing miracles through his music, such as lightening lamps with his singing. His contributions laid the foundation for North Indian classical music, earning him the title of one of the "Navratnas" (nine jewels) of Akbar's court.
