Tana Lake
Tana Lake, also known as Lake Tana, is the largest freshwater lake in Ethiopia and the source of the Blue Nile River. Located in the Ethiopian Highlands, it spans about 3,600 square kilometers and features numerous islands, some of which host ancient monasteries. The lake is vital for local communities, providing water, fish, and transportation. Its unique ecosystem supports diverse bird and aquatic life, making it an important natural and cultural resource. Tana Lake also plays a key role in regional agriculture and hydroelectric power generation, notably powering the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam.
