Tailwheel configuration

A tailwheel aircraft features a small wheel attached at the tail of the plane, with main wheels under the wings or fuselage. This setup provides better maneuverability on rough or unpaved surfaces and allows for shorter takeoff and landing distances. However, it requires more skill to handle, especially during ground operations, because it can be less stable and prone to "weathervaning" into the wind. Tailwheel configurations are common in vintage aircraft, bush flying, and aerobatics, offering advantages in versatility and terrain access despite increased pilot workload during ground maneuvers.
