Tailings Ponds

Tailings ponds are large, engineered basins used to store leftover materials from mining operations, particularly in the extraction of minerals like gold, copper, or oil sands. After processing the valuable minerals, the remaining mixture of water, chemicals, and fine rock particles—called tailings—is held in these ponds to allow the solids to settle or be contained safely. They prevent environmental contamination by isolating potentially harmful residues. Managing tailings ponds involves careful monitoring to prevent leaks, spills, or dam failures, which could impact nearby ecosystems and water sources.
