Tönnies' Gemeinschaft and Gesellschaft
Tönnies' concepts of Gemeinschaft and Gesellschaft describe two types of social relationships. Gemeinschaft (community) refers to close, personal bonds based on family, tradition, and shared values, typical of rural or traditional societies. Gesellschaft (society), on the other hand, involves more impersonal, formal associations driven by individual interests and contractual relationships, common in modern, urban settings. These concepts help explain how societies function and change—from tight-knit communities to more anonymous, organized structures—highlighting the shift from emotional, communal ties to rational, contractual interactions.
