Syphilis Testing

Syphilis testing involves analyzing a blood sample or a sore sample to detect the presence of the bacteria Treponema pallidum, which causes the disease. There are two main types: non-treponemal tests (like RPR or VDRL) that detect antibodies produced in response to infection, and treponemal tests (such as FTA-ABS) that identify specific antibodies against the bacteria. Usually, a screening test is followed by confirmatory tests. Early detection allows for effective treatment with antibiotics, preventing serious health problems and reducing the risk of transmission to others.
