Syndesmotic Injury

A syndesmotic injury involves damage to the ligaments that connect the tibia and fibula bones in the lower leg, just above the ankle. These ligaments, called the syndesmosis, provide stability to the ankle joint by holding these bones together. When injured, usually from trauma or twisted movements, these ligaments may stretch or tear, leading to ankle pain, instability, and difficulty bearing weight. Proper diagnosis and treatment are important to restore stability and prevent long-term joint problems. Treatment options range from rest and immobilization to surgery, depending on the severity of the injury.
