Syndesmosis Injury

A syndesmosis injury involves damage to the ligaments connecting the two bones of the lower leg (the tibia and fibula) just above the ankle. This injury often results from a twisting or rotational force, such as during sports. The ligament injury causes instability and pain, especially when walking or bearing weight. Rest, ice, and immobilization are typical treatments, and in some cases, surgery may be needed to restore proper alignment and stability of the ankle joint. Recognizing this injury early helps prevent long-term issues like chronic instability or arthritis.
