synaptotagmin
Synaptotagmin is a protein that plays a crucial role in nerve cell communication. It acts as a sensor for calcium ions, which flood into nerve cells when they are activated. When calcium binds to synaptotagmin, it triggers the release of chemical messengers called neurotransmitters from tiny bubbles (vesicles) in the nerve endings. These neurotransmitters then carry signals across the small gaps (synapses) to neighboring cells, allowing rapid information transfer. In essence, synaptotagmin helps nerves respond quickly and efficiently during communication by sensing calcium and helping release signaling molecules.
