Symptoms (hoarseness, sore throat)

Hoarseness and sore throat are common symptoms often caused by inflammation or irritation of the throat and vocal cords. Hoarseness means your voice sounds raspy, weak, or altered because the vocal cords are swollen or not vibrating properly. A sore throat is discomfort or pain in the throat area, usually from infection, dryness, or irritation. These symptoms can result from colds, allergies, voice overuse, or other illnesses.
