Symbiodinium

Symbiodinium is a genus of tiny, photosynthetic algae that live inside the cells of certain marine animals, most notably corals. These algae perform photosynthesis, converting sunlight into energy, and share these nutrients with their hosts, helping corals grow and thrive. In return, corals provide a protected environment and access to sunlight. This mutual relationship is vital for the health of coral reefs, as it sustains the bright colors and productivity of these ecosystems. When water temperatures rise or conditions become stressful, corals may expel Symbiodinium, leading to coral bleaching and potential reef decline.
