Sylhet District Language Movement
The Sylhet District Language Movement was a protest in 1952 aimed at preserving Bengali language rights in the Sylhet region of East Pakistan (now Bangladesh). During this period, the central government enforced Urdu as the sole state language, which was opposed by Bengali-speaking people who wanted to recognize their language officially. In Sylhet, people protested to ensure Bengali's use in education and government. Although not as large as the broader Pakistani Language Movement, Sylhet's protests highlighted regional cultural identity and contributed to Bangladesh’s independence movement by emphasizing the importance of linguistic and cultural recognition.
