Swedish-Norwegian Union
The Swedish-Norwegian Union, established in 1814, was a political alliance between Sweden and Norway created after the Napoleonic Wars. Norway sought independence but was forced into a union with Sweden under a common monarch, while maintaining its own constitution, parliament, and legal system. The union aimed to balance Norwegian autonomy with Swedish oversight, lasting until 1905. During this period, both countries managed their internal affairs separately but shared a monarch and diplomatic policy. The union ended peacefully in 1905 when Norway declared independence, becoming a fully sovereign nation.
