Surgical site infections (SSIs)
Surgical site infections (SSIs) are infections that occur at or near a surgical incision within 30 days of surgery or up to a year if an implant is involved. These infections can cause redness, swelling, pain, fever, and pus. They happen when bacteria or germs enter the body through the surgical wound, despite sterile procedures. SSIs can range from mild to severe and may require additional treatment or antibiotics. Proper wound care, hygiene, and timely medical attention help reduce the risk of SSIs and promote healing after surgery.
