supplementary motor area

The supplementary motor area (SMA) is a part of the brain located on the top middle portion of the brain's cortex, near the motor regions responsible for controlling movement. It plays a key role in planning and coordinating complex, sequential movements, especially those that are internally generated rather than triggered by external stimuli. The SMA also contributes to the initiation of voluntary movements, coordination between both sides of the body, and certain aspects of motor learning. Essentially, it helps organize and prepare movements before they are executed, working closely with other motor areas to ensure smooth, purposeful actions.
