Superstructure (in Marxist theory)

In Marxist theory, the superstructure refers to everything built upon the economic base of a society, including its laws, government, culture, beliefs, and institutions. It reflects and maintains the underlying economic relationships and class structures. Essentially, the superstructure shapes and is shaped by the material conditions of production, serving to justify and reproduce the dominant class's interests. It is not separate from the economic base but interconnected, influencing societal values, ideas, and institutions in ways that uphold the existing economic order.
