Sunni and Shia
Sunni and Shia are two main branches of Islam, differing primarily in their beliefs about leadership after Prophet Muhammad’s death. Sunnis, making up about 85-90% of Muslims, believe that community consensus should guide leadership, emphasizing elected or chosen leaders. Shias, about 10-15%, hold that leadership should stay within Prophet Muhammad’s family, specifically through his cousin and son-in-law, Ali. These differences have led to distinct religious practices and cultural traditions. Despite disparities, both groups share core beliefs in God, the Quran, and Prophet Muhammad’s teachings.
