Sumatran Elephant
The Sumatran elephant is a smaller subspecies of the Asian elephant, native to Indonesia’s island of Sumatra. It has distinctive features like smaller ears and a more domed head compared to African elephants. These elephants typically live in tropical rainforests and are crucial for maintaining forest health through their movement and feeding habits. They are herbivores, mainly feeding on grasses, leaves, and fruits. Due to habitat loss, poaching, and human-wildlife conflict, Sumatran elephants are critically endangered, with only a few thousand remaining in the wild. Conservation efforts aim to protect their populations and preserve their natural habitat.
