Submillimeter wavelengths

Submillimeter wavelengths are very short wavelengths of electromagnetic radiation, situated between microwaves and infrared light in the electromagnetic spectrum. They are typically measured in fractions of a millimeter. These wavelengths are useful for studying cold objects in space, like molecular clouds and dust, because they can penetrate dust clouds and reveal features otherwise hidden. Submillimeter astronomy helps scientists understand the formation of stars and galaxies, as well as the chemical composition of interstellar space. They require specialized telescopes located in high, dry places or in space to avoid atmospheric interference.
